Wycombe Abbey School Hong Kong

1-on-1 Instrumental Programme with PURE Orchestral Centre

2025-2026

The Wycombe Abbey School Hong Kong (WASHK) Music Instrumental Programme, in collaboration with Pure Orchestral Centre, is dedicated to providing high-quality music education. We believe that music can play a pivotal part in every child’s life. This belief is echoed by leaders like Sir Keir Starmer, who, in a recent interview with Classic FM, spoke about the profound role music played in his own childhood. The UK Prime Minister’s announcement of £88m in funding for extracurricular activities, particularly music lessons at WASHK, underscores the global recognition of music’s power to enrich young lives.

Here are 6 reasons why you should enroll:

First, our programme is an indispensable component of the exquisite British education culture at WASHK. It provides a comprehensive and well-rounded curriculum that complements a high-quality academic journey.

Here are different kinds of instruments that we offer lessons at WASHK.

Furthermore, we provide a high-calibre faculty with broad and refined teaching experience. Our instructors are passionate professionals dedicated to fostering musical talent.

A Comprehensive Curriculum for Growth

Through the WASHK music lessons, students are also encouraged to take an Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) examination. Their instrumental teacher will fully support them in this endeavor. ABRSM is the world’s leading provider of music exams, offering assessments to over 600,000 candidates in over 90 countries every year. ABRSM’s mission is to inspire achievement in music. In partnership with the Royal Schools of Music, the examinations support high-quality music-making, help build musical skills, provide goals, and encourage progress.

We invite you to join us in providing your child with the gift of music.

IMP lessons will run throughout the school year. Each term’s lessons will begin in the second or third week after the start of term. The number of lessons is determined by the number of weeks in a given term.

  • Young students who wish to learn an instrument in a friendly and familiar environment.

  • Students who are wishing to improve their instrumental skills before entering school ensembles such as the orchestra or string ensemble.

  • Parents who would like their children to have a go at one or two instruments to see which suits their child best.

  • Parents who would like their child to have music lessons without taking up family time in the evening or on weekends. Convenience for both students and parents.

Students will have a lesson each week which will normally take place during the school day on a rotational timetable, or after school (conditions apply).

  • Students will miss some of their regular classes, however, each week’s class time will be different to ensure that students does not miss multiple classes of the same subject each week.

  • Students will have a practice diary which shows what they need to practice at home.

  • The practice diary also contains a short lesson report each week, which acts as a form of communication between the parent and teacher.

  • If the school allows, parents will also receive videos showing students’ progress as time flies.

Whilst every lesson is significant in its own way, we take effort as much as we can, to ensure that your child does not miss the same class per week. Lessons will be scheduled using rotating schedule to ensure fairness across the curriculum. Despite children might miss some of their time in class, research shows that there is a strong correlation between students who take part in an instrumental study programme and academic success.

Learning more than one kind of instruments is very common. However, it’s better to get started and make some progress on one first, before starting another. If your child is desperately keen to start two but you are not sure which one to go for, then taking both together for a while would help them make up their mind. Avoid ‘hopping’ from one instrument to another, as that would only make very little progress and can de-motivate your child.

In general, our teachers will offer a ‘make-up’ lesson if a child misses a lesson due to a pre-planned school event, or for whatever reason he or she has to miss the lesson but with proper notifications. However, make-up lessons will NOT be provided when something is going on and we did not get informed. Make-up lessons will be offered when your instructor has a gap in their own schedule or at the end of the term.

A small number of lessons will be given after school at a fixed time slot, and final decisions are being made by the school. Students who are receiving instrument lessons after school must be picked up in-person as there’s NO additional bus services provided. You can request an after school lesson by filling in the enrollment form, but spots are subject to availability and will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis.

Parents can make a huge difference to a child’s musical progress at home. Establishing a regular time and place for practice has been proven to be the most essential element for success. Using the same time for practice each day has also been proven to make a significant difference. Practicing for a short time each day has far more benefits than just one or two long sessions per week. Do not insist on practicing for a certain length of time to begin with. Just a short practice of things that have been set by the teacher will keep your child feeling successful and motivated.

Your child’s practice diary should keep you informed about what your child is studying and the teacher will fill in the short report chart each week. If you have any questions for the tutor, please write them in the note section to be used in the next lesson. You will also receive lesson videos at some times through the term, if school permits.
