Flute Lessons: Discover the Joy of Playing the Flute
The flute is arguably one of the most popular woodwind instruments. In fact, it is second only to the piano and violin. Its enduring appeal is largely due to its elegant appearance. Moreover, its relatively small size and light weight make it a handy and portable instrument, especially when compared to the much larger brass family. As the soprano of the orchestra, the flute primarily plays in the high register. Consequently, it produces a beautifully clear and bright tone. A unique feature of the flute is its tone production: unlike other woodwind instruments that require a reed, the flute’s sound comes from the flow of air across an opening. This is why it is often referred to as a “side-blown” instrument.
For students who have already made good progress on the recorder, the flute presents a natural and rewarding progression. We recommend starting flute lessons at around 7 years of age or above. At this age, a student’s hands are developed enough to comfortably hold the instrument.
