UP Band & Strings Program will run throughout the school year. The number of lessons is determined by the number of weeks in a given term.

  • Young students who wish to learn an instrument in a friendly and familiar environment.

  • Students who are wishing to improve their instrumental skills and entering school ensembles such as the orchestra or string ensemble.

  • Parents who would like their children to have a go at one or two instruments to see which suits their child best.

  • Parents who would like their child to have music lessons without taking up family time in the evening or on weekends. Convenience for both students and parents.

Students will have a lesson each week at least which will take place after school.

  • Students may miss their scholl bus service at 4:00pm and are required to arrange a self pickup.

  • Students will have a practice diary which shows what they need to practice at home.

  • The practice diary also contains a short lesson report each week, which acts as a form of communication between the parent and teacher.

  • If the school allows, parents will also receive videos showing students’ progress as time flies.

Learning more than one kind of instruments is very common. However, it’s better to get started and make some progress on one first, before starting another. If your child is desperately keen to start two but you are not sure which one to go for, then taking both together for a while would help them make up their mind. Avoid ‘hopping’ from one instrument to another, as that would only make very little progress and can de-motivate your child.

In general, we do not offer make-up lessons if a single child misses a lesson for any reason. Fees are non-refundable for missed lessons caused by severe weather events (including Typhoon Signal No. 8 or above and Black Rain) or closures announced by the EDB. Make-up lessons may be arranged only when your instructor has a gap in their schedule or when make-up is required at the end of the term, and in such cases, the make-up session may take place at our centre in Wanchai subject to availability and confirmation.

Parents can make a huge difference to a child’s musical progress at home. Establishing a regular time and place for practice has been proven to be the most essential element for success. Using the same time for practice each day has also been proven to make a significant difference. Practicing for a short time each day has far more benefits than just one or two long sessions per week. Do not insist on practicing for a certain length of time to begin with. Just a short practice of things that have been set by the teacher will keep your child feeling successful and motivated.

Your child’s practice diary should keep you informed about what your child is studying and the teacher will fill in the short report chart each week. If you have any questions for the tutor, please write them in the note section to be used in the next lesson. You will also receive lesson videos at some times through the term, if school permits.
