Dear Parents of Grade 3, 4, and 5 Students,

Music has been an integral part of our school’s identity for many years. As we look toward the 2026-2027 academic year, we are excited to introduce a revitalized direction for the Upper Primary After School Activities (UP ASA) Band & Strings Program. While we are proud to build upon the solid foundation and positive musical outcomes established throughout our long-standing history, we are entering a new chapter characterized by specialized professional instruction and a more robust connection to our school’s long-term music curriculum

The Power of the Ensemble
Our program continues to be rooted in a North American approach to music education, which places the ensemble experience at the heart of learning. We believe that playing in a group is one of the most effective ways to foster a child’s musical and personal growth. Beyond learning notes and rhythms, students develop essential life skills such as discipline, active listening, and the ability to collaborate toward a common goal. By focusing on collective music-making, we create an environment that is both educationally productive and socially rewarding for our young musicians.

Specialized Training and Framework
To ensure the highest quality of instruction, our program features training led by professional instrumental instructors who specialize in their respective fields. The curriculum is designed to be comprehensive yet practical, offering a balanced mix of learning environments:

  1. Group Instrumental Lessons: Focused instruction on technical fundamentals.
  2. Instrumental Sectionals: Specialized sessions where students refine the unique requirements of their specific instrument family.
  3. Full Ensemble Rehearsals: Where all students join together to experience the power of a full band or string orchestra.

These components lead toward two key milestones in the school year: our gala performances in January and May 2027. These events provide students with a tangible goal and a platform to share their progress with the school community.

A Seamless Path to Middle School and Beyond

One of the most significant features and changings of this revitalized program is the strong alignment with our Middle and High School music curriculum.

We have established a clear “musical pipeline” to ensure that students are well-prepared for the standard and challenges of the secondary level. By joining this program, students are set on a path that progresses through our various school organizations—from the Beginning and Dragon Bands to the Concert Band, Symphonic Band, and eventually the prestigious Association of Music for International Schools (AMIS) Honour Band.

To facilitate this continuity, our program works in close conjunction with the Middle School department. This includes opportunities for exchange visits, joint workshops, and masterclasses, allowing our Upper Primary students to learn directly from secondary faculty and older peers.

Opportunities for Excellence
For students seeking further challenges, we provide avenues for external recognition. Advanced players will be encouraged to represent the school as part of our school teams in the Hong Kong Schools’ Music Festival, participating in solos or chamber instrumental groups. Additionally, our curriculum supports students who wish to pursue graded examinations through world-renowned boards such as ABRSM, Trinity, and Rock School, providing a clear benchmark for their individual achievements.

We look forward to welcoming your child to this vibrant new chapter of music-making and helping them build a strong foundation for their future musical journey.

Warm regards,
Ringo Chan
