Why Wells Cathedral School? The Gold Standard in Music Training

Before we dive into the event logistics, it is crucial for parents and students to understand the caliber of the institution visiting us.

Wells Cathedral School is one of only five specialist music schools in the United Kingdom supported by the Department for Education’s Music and Dance Scheme. It offers a unique educational model that seamlessly blends elite musical training with rigorous academic standards.

The Pathway to Higher Music Education

For students eyeing top-tier conservatories—such as the Royal Academy of Music, the Royal College of Music, or Juilliard—early preparation is non-negotiable. Wells Cathedral School serves as a dedicated incubator for this talent.

By attending the auditions at Pure Orchestral Centre, you are exploring a curriculum that includes:

  • 1-on-1 Tuition: Instruction from world-renowned professors and active professional musicians.

  • Performance Opportunities: Regular concerts in cathedral settings and professional venues.

  • Masterclasses: Exposure to visiting international artists.

  • Academic Balance: A system designed to ensure musical practice does not come at the expense of A-Level or GCSE success.

This visit by Mr. Alex Laing is particularly significant. As the Director of Music, Mr. Laing is at the forefront of British music education. His presence in Hong Kong signifies a serious commitment to recruiting the region’s top talent.

Music Specialist vs. General Education: A Comparison

How to Prepare: Audition & Interview Requirements

Success in music auditions requires more than just talent; it requires preparation and strategy. Whether you are a violinist, pianist, or wind player, the requirements set by Wells Cathedral School are designed to test both your current ability and your potential.

1. For Music Applicants (The Specialist Route)

If you are aiming for a place on the specialist music scheme, you must demonstrate technical proficiency and musicality.

  • Requirement: Prepare two short, contrasting pieces on your principal instrument.

  • Tip: “Contrasting” usually means different eras (e.g., Baroque vs. Romantic) or different tempos (e.g., Adagio vs. Allegro). Choose pieces that you know well, rather than a new, difficult piece you just learned.

2. The Interview (All Applicants)

Every candidate will have a short interview with Mr. Martin Ashton, the Deputy Head.

  • What to expect: This is a conversation to gauge the student’s character, academic interests, and readiness for boarding life. Be prepared to discuss your favorite subjects, your hobbies outside of music, and why you want to study in the UK.

3. General Interest (Non-Specialist)

Wells Cathedral School is inclusive. If you are a student who loves music but does not intend to pursue it professionally, you are warmly invited.

  • Consultation: You can book an admissions interview to discuss the general academic entry. Wells offers a vibrant music life for non-specialists, including choirs and orchestras that do not require the same intensity of training as the specialist stream.

FAQ:

My child plays two instruments. Should they audition on both?

The requirement is for two pieces on the principal instrument. However, if your child is highly proficient in a second instrument, please mention this in your registration. Mr. Laing may request to hear a scale or short excerpt if time permits.

Wells Cathedral School accepts students from prep school age through to Sixth Form. These auditions are primarily for entry into Year 7, Year 9, and Year 12 (Sixth Form), but all families are welcome to inquire.

You do not need to be a current student of Pure Orchestral Centre, but you must fill out the registration form available at our centre to secure a slot. We are acting as the host and coordinator for this event.

Universities and Conservatories view the Wells Specialist Music scheme highly because it demonstrates discipline, high-level performance experience, and time management skills. It is a powerful differentiator on a UCAS application.

Yes. The presentation at 10:00 AM is open to families who are in the early stages of research. However, we still recommend registering your attendance so we can manage seating capacity.
