Multi-Instrumentalist | Ensemble Director | Music Pedagogue

A Pillar of the Hong Kong Music Community

Nigel Leung is a versatile music educator and improvising musician who has seamlessly integrated his international expertise into the local landscape. Relocating to Hong Kong in 2021, Nigel immediately joined the faculty of the Pure Orchestral Centre, where he quickly established himself as a vital pillar of the institution’s teaching and ensemble programs. His commitment to the Hong Kong music scene is reflected in his ability to bridge the gap between professional performance and school-based education, fostering a sense of belonging and artistic growth for students within the Pure Orchestral community and beyond.

International Scholarship and Academic Foundation

Nigel’s pedagogical approach is underpinned by an elite academic background as a graduate of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music (University of Sydney). During his time in Australia, he was the recipient of the prestigious Anthony and Sharon Lee Jazz Scholarship (2016-2019) and was recognized by The Daily Telegraph as a representative voice in the Sydney International Jazz Festival. His training is uniquely comprehensive, encompassing classical flute repertoire studied under Geoffrey Collins and Rosamund Plummer, alongside jazz improvisation and global rhythmic concepts. This dual-stream background allows him to provide a well-rounded musical education that respects traditional discipline while encouraging creative spontaneity.

Specialist in International Curricula and Theory

Nigel possesses extensive hands-on experience navigating the complexities of international school circuits. He is an expert in providing instrumental and theoretical instruction across a broad developmental range (Grade 1 through Grade 12), with specific expertise in supporting candidates for IB Diploma, AP Music Theory, IGCSE, and ABRSM graded examinations. His teaching focuses on building “real musical literacy,” moving students beyond simple rote learning toward confident sight-reading, strong rhythmic foundations, and sophisticated expressive phrasing.

Ensemble Leadership and Collaborative Artistry

As a highly sought-after Ensemble Director and piano accompanist, Nigel is a specialist in the collaborative mechanics of music-making. He is equally comfortable leading a jazz combo or accompanying advanced performers preparing for high-stakes recitals, auditions, and assessments. His performance history at renowned venues such as Venue 505 and the John Clancy Auditorium informs his ensemble pedagogy, which emphasizes “captivating spontaneity” and active listening. He excels at helping students find their own musical voice while ensuring they develop the technical precision required for elite ensemble work.

Innovative Pedagogy and Global Perspectives

Nigel’s teaching is further distinguished by his research into micro-rhythmic gestures found in Senegalese Sabar and Tama drumming traditions. As a multi-instrumentalist proficient in woodwind, brass, keyboard, and percussion, he applies these global rhythmic insights to help students develop an intuitive sense of timing and phrasing. Whether starting a student on their first instrument or guiding a senior student through a university-level audition, Nigel offers patient, structured guidance grounded in years of professional international performance and a deep dedication to the Hong Kong music education community.
