Distinguished Academic Foundation and Mentorship
Grace Tang is a highly seasoned music educator whose career is supported by an elite international academic background. She earned her Master’s degree in Music Education from Boston University, USA, following a Bachelor’s degree in Music from the University of British Columbia (UBC), Canada, where she majored in General Music and Composition. During her time at UBC, Grace developed high-level dual-instrumental proficiency. While the piano serves as a primary pillar of her teaching, she achieved an equal standard of mastery on the clarinet under the tutelage of the renowned Canadian clarinetist Gene Ramsbottom, former Principal Clarinetist of the Vancouver Opera Orchestra and Professor of Clarinet at UBC. This rigorous mentorship ensures her clarinet instruction and performance are held to the highest professional standards.
Professional Performance and Ensemble Artistry
Grace’s expertise as a woodwind specialist is reflected in her active participation in international and school-based ensemble productions. In 2006, she was invited to perform with the UBC Symphonic Wind Ensemble as an Alumni clarinetist during its prestigious Asian tour. Her reputation in the field also led to her being invited as a guest clarinetist for the Shrewsbury School of Hong Kong’s musical production. These performance credits inform her pedagogical approach, allowing her to provide students with “real-world” insights into ensemble dynamics, pit orchestra performance, and the technical demands of professional productions.
Decades of Institutional Leadership and Pedagogy
A cornerstone of the Hong Kong music education community, Grace has served as a distinguished Woodwind Faculty member at PURE Orchestral Centre since 2003. For over two decades, she has played a vital role in shaping the center’s instrumental programs. Her teaching experience spans the entire developmental spectrum, from mentoring young children through the Yamaha Junior Music Course (JMC) to guiding advanced diploma-level students. Her ability to foster creativity and discipline in both group settings and private studios has made her one of the most sought-after dual-instrument specialists in the region.
Multifaceted Expertise: Scoring and Music Therapy
Grace’s pedagogical depth is further enhanced by her diverse professional certifications. She holds the prestigious ARCT Diploma in Piano Performance from the Royal Conservatory of Music (Canada), a Diploma in Film Scoring from the Vancouver Film School, and a Diploma in Music Therapy. These credentials allow her to offer a holistic learning experience, integrating creative composition and therapeutic principles into her lessons. This approach is particularly effective in helping students overcome performance anxiety and develop a sophisticated understanding of musical texture and emotion.
Holistic Philosophy of Artistry
Grace’s teaching philosophy is centered on the harmonious balance between technical excellence and expressive artistry. She believes that a strong technical foundation—on both piano and clarinet—is the vehicle for true creative expression. By drawing on her 20+ years of experience, her background in music therapy, and her extensive ensemble history, she encourages her students to perform with intention and heart. Grace’s ultimate goal is to instill in every student a lifelong love of music and the confidence to excel in both solo and collaborative environments.
