The Foundation of Musical Success:
Proper Instrument Selection
A student’s musical journey begins with a single, critical decision: choosing the right instrument. We believe that a proper match—one that aligns a student’s physical aptitude with their personal interest—is the most important factor in achieving the desired result. When a student is correctly matched with their instrument, they find more enjoyment in practice, leading to a stronger Foundational Level start, a smoother transition into the Developing Intermediate stage, and eventual excellence in our Refined Intermediate ensembles.
A Thoughtful Summer Selection Process
To ensure every student is set up for success, the instrument selection process will take place over the entire summer break before the school year begins. While we advise completing this process early to allow for a smooth start, there is no immediate rush; the goal is to make a thoughtful, well-informed decision.
During this period, we take a holistic approach to evaluation. A student’s age, physical appearance (such as hand size or dental structure), and natural aptitude are all taken into detailed account to ensure the chosen instrument is a perfect fit for their ergonomics and potential.
Steps to Choosing Your Instrument
To assist in this important choice, we have developed a clear, step-by-step path:
Online Exploration (Primary Step): We encourage all students to watch the specific videos on this page we have specifcally curated for demonstrating the characteristics and sounds of each instrument. Most students are able to make a confident decision based on these age-appropriate demonstrations.
Expert Guidance: Mr. Ringo Chan, Director of the Pure Orchestral Centre, is available to provide professional consultations. He provides insight into how a student’s physical build and natural aptitude align with specific instruments, ensuring the choice is sustainable for long-term growth.
Complimentary Suitability Trial (By Appointment): If a student has watched the videos but remains unsure if the instrument is a good physical match, we offer a complimentary 15-minute live trial at the Pure Orchestral Centre in Wan Chai.
Please note: This session is not an introductory “tasting” or “intro” session. Its specific purpose is to reaffirm a choice that has already been considered, ensuring the instrument is truly suitable for the student’s physical profile before they commit to their studies.
By taking the time this summer to ensure a proper match, we help our students begin their musical education with confidence and the best possible foundation for progress.
