Meet Nigel Leung: A Jazz Musician and Educator

Recipient of The Anthony and Sharon Lee Jazz Scholarship (2016-2019), Nigel Leung is a versatile improvising musician. He is based in both Australia and Hong Kong. In 2016, The Daily Telegraph’s Caryn Metcalfe described him as one of the “representative from Sydney North Shore in the Sydney International Jazz Festival.” A review from LiveReviveSydney’s Matt Jenkins also praised the Sandy Evans Group, which he co-led. Jenkins said the group’s performance at the Sydney Converge Festival 2017 was “beautiful listening and captivating spontaneity that just blew me away.”

Performance and Education Background

Nigel has performed at many renowned venues. These include the SIMA Lounge, Venue 505, LazyBones Marrickville Lounge, IOMeyers Studio, and John Clancy Auditorium. He has also played at many private and corporate events. Nigel is a graduate of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, University of Sydney. His mentors have been a significant part of his development. His teachers include Yacou Mbaye, Simon Barker, and Sarangan Sriranganathan, with whom he studied rhythmic and vocal concepts. He studied classical flute repertoire with Geoffrey Collins, Rosamund Plummer, and Christine Draegar. For improvisation, his teachers were Steve Barry, Matt McMahon, Dale Barlow, and Dayna Stephens. These are just a few of the many colleagues and mentors to whom he owes much of his playing.

A Unique Approach to Music

Nigel’s current research interest is in micro-rhythmic gestures. These are found in Senegalese Sabar and Tama drumming traditions. He studies their usefulness in compositional structures and improvisational language. As a skilled multi-instrumentalist, he has experience teaching and performing on woodwind, brass, keyboard, and percussion instruments. He applies his diverse knowledge to many musical situations. He is also a dedicated educator who helps students find their own voice.
