Meet Wing-sum Ng Sophie: Cellist, Producer and Educator
Born and raised in Hong Kong, Wing-sum Ng Sophie is a truly talented cellist, electronic music producer, and composer. She genuinely loves sharing music with others. Sophie earned her Bachelor of Music degree from the well-known Berklee College of Music (BCM) in Boston, USA. While at Berklee, she focused on cello performance and electronic music production.
Early Achievements and Expert Mentors
Sophie was fortunate to study with several famous cello masters. For example, she learned from Owen Young of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Her teachers also included Eugene Friesen, a four-time Grammy Award winner. Sophie’s early accomplishments are quite impressive. At just 13, she earned a distinction in the ABRSM Cello diploma. Later, in 2016, she also secured second place in the China region selection of the 10th Singapore-China International Music Competition.
A Team Player and Versatile Performer
At BCM, Sophie truly discovered her passion for working with others. She often performed as a cello recording artist. In addition, she contributed to many different musical projects, from movie scores to modern and pop music. Moreover, Sophie actively joined various BCM ensembles. These groups included orchestras and chamber groups, clearly showcasing her wide range of musical abilities.
Dedicated Conductor and Inspiring Teacher
Beyond her performances, Sophie is a committed conductor for several string ensembles at local schools. She not only leads her teams but also arranges music to inspire young musicians. Over the years, Sophie has improved her skills on both violin and piano. This enables her to guide her ensembles with more confidence and creativity.
Furthermore, Sophie’s dedication to music education and her warm, friendly style make her an excellent mentor for young musicians. This significantly helps her work better to create a supportive space where students can explore their musical talents and grow as performers.
